He is a vastly experienced former police driver and IAM RoadSmart examiner who has been researching developments in police driver training and their Roadcraft driver manual. He will talk about the involvement of professional racing drivers in police driver training, the influence of developments in vehicle technology and how this all links to our advanced driving. He will also answer questions such as: • We call ourselves Advanced Drivers, but where did this all begin? • Who created The System of Car Control (IPSGA)? • Where did ‘Do not drive so fast that you cannot stop well within the distance you can see to be clear’ come from? • Who defined a hazard? • Who said: ‘Decisions are made on a combination of (a) what we can see; (b) what we cannot see; and (c) circumstances we can expect to develop?’

This will be followed by and evening with Sarah Sillars, IAM RoadSmart Chief Executive who will discuss technological developments which will affect drivers and important developments that have happened within the organisation, what's planned for the future, our vision and charitable objectives. The IAM rebranded as IAM RoadSmart last year and have been busy developing new driving products and tailoring the advanced driver course to better suit people's needs. Sarah has personally been influential in engaging IAM RoadSmart with policy makers and Government.

Food and drink is not provided and there is nowhere on site to buy, so please bring your own! The cost is £15.00- £20.00 as a donation to Essex Air Ambulance charity. You're welcome to give more! Come along; join in and tell us what you want from the club. Pat Doughty, IAM RoadSmart Charity and Operations Director will be our guest speaker. A lot has been happening at IAM: they’ve moved from Chiswick to Welwyn and have been looking hard at how to engage with new sectors and deliver new products. They’ve reorganised their service delivery team – the people who we regularly engage with – and are developing new routes to IAM membership and new module-based training packs. They redesigned the advanced driver package last year and we started delivering the new training programme last summer. Pat will bring us up to speed on all the new IAM initiatives and tell us where he expects the IAM to develop in the future. This should be a lively and interesting event!

Chris Gilbert is a specialist advanced driving instructor and former Police driver, Police advanced driver instructor and examiner. He has over 50 years experience of driver training and has produced a series of DVDs to help with training. “Eyes on Main Beam” is one of the series and explains the subconscious act of how drivers use their eyes when driving. With the aid of clever animation Chris explains exactly how, by consciously looking up and scanning, the standard of driving will improve. This session is recommended for all, but is especially useful for those who are preparing to take their advanced driving test.

Experience some of the training given to the Royal family, to specialist units within the British Army, international government agencies and to police protection officers from around the world. You'll experience understeer & oversteer, braking exercises, forward and reverse slalom, steering techniques and team competition. They use large standard cars (not yours!) on an off-road circuit near Hemel Hempstead and you'll create and be taught how to correct skids and learn how to complete a specialist manoeuvre such as ‘J’ turns (a manoeuvre frequently used by stunt drivers). Tuesday 15 March 2016 at 7.45 pmMEFAS, New MaldenAnnual General Meeting; plus 150 Years of the London UndergroundGroup AGM where we'll hear about group activities over the past year, receive the annual accounts and elect officers and the management committee members for 2016-17. After the formal part of the evening, guest speaker John Horsman from the London Transport Museum will give an interesting presentation on 150 years of the London Underground. The Tube was the first mass-transit underground system in the world and, before electrification, the first underground train lines operated with steam locomotives. Some of the early locomotives and carriages are preserved in working order in the Museum. Now any extensions under London are dug by huge tunnelling machines but the early tunnels were either dug out by hand or with explosives or using a ‘cut and cover’ technique. The London Underground has had to adapt to wartime uses and peacetime population and commerce changes and is now part of a huge integrated public transport system.

Tuesday 17 November 2015 at 7.45pmMEFAS, New MaldenSarah Sillars OBE, IAM chief executive - the IAM now and in the futureMeet the IAM Chief Executive, Sarah Sillars OBE, hear about Sarah's plans for the organisation and how they might affect us as members or might affect our group. Sarah Sillars, OBE and Hon FIMI, joined the IAM in February 2015. Her mission will be to improve driving and riding skills and to campaign for legislation to improve road safety. Sarah joined the charity having overseen the commercialisation of Semta, the sector skills council for engineering and advanced manufacturing. She has a long and illustrious career within the automotive sector, having been CEO and Executive Chair of the Institute of the Motoring Industry (IMI). She was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in June 2008 for services to skills training and the retail motor industry.

You are invited to come along to this event where the Group will be showing two very unique DVDs. One DVD covers the final day of commercial services of Concorde with British Airways. This is a wonderful tribute to this iconic plane. The second DVD has just been delivered to the Group and it has the highlights of the Group visit to Speedskills in early June. It's not compulsory for the advanced driving test but would be needed it you're aiming to achieve a F!RST - the highest level of pass. And if you plan to go for the Masters assessment, it's essential to deliver a good commentary. As well as that, it's a valuable asset for any advanced driver. Come along on 20th when Fergus Taylor-Gregg (SLAM Chief Observer) and John Dowell (IAM Examiner) will use a DVD presentation to show you a professional commentary and explain how you can use it to best effect both in your advanced driving test and everyday driving.

Brooklands is the Home of Concorde - more than 30% of every airframe, British and French, was manufactured there. Discover the leading role played by Brooklands in the Concorde. This talk is on the Concorde fleet and the history of the Brooklands aircraft and includes a short film. G-BBDG was the third Concorde built in Britain and this country’s first production Concorde. First flown in February 1974, ‘Delta Golf’, as she is known, carried out a large part of the certification work that saw Concorde flying in commercial service between 1976 and 2003. Delta Golf was the fastest production Concorde and in 1974 she became the first aircraft ever to carry 100 people at twice the speed of sound - 1,350mph.

A 3-hour course covers an initial briefing on the causes of skids and how to cope with them, leading to time spent on the skidpan practising controlling vehicle skids. We had a very good briefing on what the HA does and saw the state-of-the-art technology live and in use by the operations staff. A patrol stopped by to show us their vehicle and its on-board equipment before it had to depart to close the M23!
