The Tube was the first mass-transit underground system in the world and, before electrification, the first underground train lines operated with steam locomotives. Some of the early locomotives and carriages are preserved in working order in the Museum.
Now any extensions under London are dug by huge tunnelling machines but the early tunnels were either dug out by hand or with explosives or using a ‘cut and cover’ technique. The London Underground has had to adapt to wartime uses and peacetime population and commerce changes and is now part of a huge integrated public transport system.
